⚔️ Why I Think Solo Leveling Is Overrated
Disclaimer: This is just my personal opinion as an anime fan. I don’t mean to attack anyone who enjoys Solo Leveling — if you love it, that’s awesome! This is just how I feel about the hype surrounding it.
There’s no denying that Solo Leveling has become one of the most talked-about anime in recent years. From web novel readers to manhwa fans, the anticipation for the anime adaptation was massive. And when the series finally hit the screen, the fandom exploded. But after watching it and experiencing the hype, I can’t help but feel that Solo Leveling is overrated. Here’s why:
1. The Story Is Too Predictable
The “weak protagonist suddenly becomes overpowered” trope isn’t new. We’ve seen it in dozens of shounen and isekai titles. While Solo Leveling adds flashy art and cool dungeon settings, the overall story arc is pretty standard: a powerless hero gets a massive buff, steamrolls enemies, and leaves little room for suspense.
2. Lack of Strong Supporting Characters
Jinwoo steals the spotlight — and while that works at first, it also makes the rest of the cast feel underdeveloped. Side characters rarely get the chance to shine, and many end up being forgettable. A good anime needs a strong supporting cast, but here, they’re mostly background noise.
3. Style Over Substance
Yes, the animation is gorgeous and the battles look slick. But beautiful fights can only carry a show so far. At times, it feels like Solo Leveling relies more on style than actual story depth, leaving some episodes feeling hollow once the hype of the visuals fades.
4. Power Fantasy Taken Too Far
Many fans love Jinwoo’s insane power scaling — but for me, it removes tension. When you know the main character will almost always win, the stakes vanish. It stops being exciting and becomes predictable wish-fulfillment.
5. Overhype Creates Disappointment
With so many people calling it “the next big thing” or “the best anime of the decade,” expectations skyrocketed. And while Solo Leveling is fun, it’s nowhere near flawless. The gap between hype and reality makes it feel more disappointing than it probably deserves.
๐ Final Thoughts
I don’t hate Solo Leveling — in fact, I think it’s a solid action series with some great moments. But the level of hype surrounding it makes it hard for me to see it as the masterpiece some claim it is. It’s entertaining, sure, but overrated? Definitely.
At the end of the day, everyone’s taste is different. If you love Solo Leveling, more power to you. As for me, I’ll keep watching, but with more realistic expectations.
